Motorhome water systems: what to check

The water system is part of everyday comfort on board. After a period in storage, it is worth checking the tank, pipework, pump and fittings before your next trip.

Notice changes early

Uneven water flow, a pump running more often than usual, damp patches inside a cabinet or an unusual smell may point to a problem. Look especially at accessible hose joints and fittings. The waste-water tank and its connections deserve attention as well.

Prepare before use

Clean and flush the system in line with the vehicle and component manufacturers' instructions. After freezing weather, take extra care when checking pipework, taps and the water heater. Before winter storage, fully draining the system helps prevent frost damage.

Do not mask a leak

If water is escaping or the cause is unclear, a professional inspection is better than a temporary patch. Finding the source allows the affected area to be repaired before moisture reaches more of the interior.
